Curatorial Lab
Fostering Curatorial Practice in Uzbekistan
From February 17 to 21, 2025, the Davra Research Collective hosted the Curatorial Lab, an initiative designed to address a significant gap in curatorial practice within Uzbekistan’s contemporary art scene. This dynamic five-day program brought together 15 emerging art leaders, researchers, artists, curators and managers, for a deep dive into theory and practice.
Led by distinguished curators Filipa Ramos (Central Saint Martins) and Valentine Umansky (Tate Modern), the Lab offered insightful lectures and workshops on research methodologies, concept development, exhibition design, critical writing and collaborative curation. Regional perspectives were highlighted through contributions from the Davra Research Collective and online talks by Tamara Khassanova and Dilda Ramazan. The mentorship of Saodat Ismailova brought Central Asian realities into focus, while field visits to Tashkent’s leading art spaces turned theoretical ideas into practical insights. By the end of the Lab, participants had developed over 10 critical texts and four comprehensive exhibition proposals.
One of the standout moments was a public discussion, where over 15 guest contributors shared their thoughts on the differences between independent and institutional curatorial practices. This open dialogue enriched the Lab’s impact, fostering new ideas and diverse perspectives.
Participants left equipped with valuable skills gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical tools to tackle contemporary challenges. The Lab not only boosted professional competencies but also inspired collaboration and dialogue within the region, showcasing the power of education and cultural exchange in shaping modern curatorial practices.
The project was supported by the British Council’s Creative Collaborations programme.
