Chilltan:
Shapeshifting Eternal Spirits from Central Asia
Chilltan: Shapeshifting Eternal Spirits from Central Asia is a compilation of images and words responding to syncretic female spirits rooted on shamanic, zoroastrian, buddhist and muslim beliefs. The publication was made by our research group for documenta fifteen in order to unravel the meaning of Pari, a character of the Central Asian pandemonium.
Pari are supernatural anthropomorphic spirits; they are often presented as beautiful women or young men, but may take the form of an animal, bird, tree, flame or water. An important note to the subject of the publication was made by Saodat Ismailova that encouraged us, a young group of artists, poets, writers, photographers to look beyond the anthropomorphic and archaic, finding representation for each Pari in their own subjective contemporaneity.
The preface of the publication was written by a decolonial researcher Madina Tlostanova.
